Abig change is on the horizon for Patrick Mahomes. The Kansas City Chiefs star could be moving very soon, all for a multimillion-dollar offer that the team will be hard-pressed to refuse, regardless of the deep commitment their quarterback has to his adopted hometown.
Mahomes arrived in Kansas City, Missouri, in 2017, as the tenth overall pick in the NFL Draft. Since then, the star signal-caller has not only brought three Super Bowls to the city but has also become one of its biggest investors, with a stake, for example, in the Kansas City Current women’s soccer club.
The quarterback has become a symbol of the city and Missouri, but all that could be about to change. As is well known, the neighboring state of Kansas has been in a constant battle for years to wrest Missouri’s two professional teams, the Chiefs and the MLB’s Royals, and could be on the verge of achieving it.

Kansas’ latest push for the Chiefs
Just on Friday, May 9, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly approved a bill that will change the landscape for professional teams in the state. The new law approves hundreds of millions in incentives for teams, modifying the use of alcohol and gambling taxes.
The reform also modifies Kansas’ Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) Bond program to contribute 70% of the costs of new stadiums. The teams would pay the remainder over 30 years instead of the usual 20. With the lease for Arrowhead Stadium expiring in 2031, this is an offer the Chiefs’ management could take very seriously.
Missouri has not responded to this latest push from Kansas. On the contrary, Jackson County voters rejected a proposal to extend taxes by 3/8 of a cent to pay for renovations to Arrowhead and build a new stadium for the Royals, jeopardizing the teams’ future in the city.
What does the move mean for Mahomes and the Chiefs?
On the map, the move seems insignificant. It’s merely a matter of crossing the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas rivers, to relocate the team to the Kansas side of the city-little more than a zip code change.

Fans might experience some minor inconveniences related to the move on game day, especially those who live on the Missouri side. But, hosting the team gives the government both bragging rights and major tax revenue.
The team would have to redefine its identity, especially given the friendly rivalry between both sides of the city, especially when it comes to sports. However, nothing is set in stone. Kansas threw out the bait, and it remains to be seen if the Chiefs-or the Royals-take it.
