Indiana’s singing janitor, Richard Goodall, was back in the spotlight Thursday night, performing in front of his hometown fans in Terre Haute. The “America’s Got Talent” champion took to the stage to sing the national anthem before Indiana State’s men’s basketball game against Eureka College. Fans were also treated to his powerful performance at halftime, where he sang Journey’s iconic “Don’t Stop Believin’” — the very song that helped catapult him to national fame.

However, during his national anthem performance, Goodall made a mistake. In a heartfelt apology afterward, he explained the nerves he felt, admitting it was his first time publicly performing the anthem. He wrote:

“I want to give a huge apology. While it is not an excuse, I have never performed our national anthem publicly, and I was very nervous and completely forgot to take off my hat. Once again, I’m sorry. I have committed to sing it again at a Pacers game next week and, as always, will put my heart and soul into it. I would never disrespect the song or our country ever. Richard.”
