Adam Brody admits he was bored with The O.C. in its later seasons, copping to a ‘lack of professionalism’ on the set of the Fox series.

The 43-year-old actor, who has been seen in films such as River Wild, American Fiction and Shazam! Fury of the Gods this past year, opened up about his experience on the show in the new book Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History.

‘I think I very much let my distaste for the later episodes be known,’ the San Diego native said in the book, which was released Tuesday, according to TooFab. ‘I didn’t mask that at all, and I’m sure I openly mocked it a bit. So I’m not proud of that.’

Brody, who portrayed the role of Seth Cohen on the Fox show from 2003-2007, said that he ‘was polite to everyone’ on the set of the show and did not take his professional frustrations out on his peers.

‘I liked the directors, and the crew and I got on really well and I didn’t keep people waiting,’ said Brody, who was seen on the Hulu miniseries Fleishman Is in Trouble last year. ‘I would never scream or yell at anyone, or say anything f***ing mean.’

Brody said he ‘started to be creatively less interested’ in the show past its initial season.

‘I blame myself for a lack of professionalism, and a disrespect to the work,’ he said. ‘Had the quality been the quality of season one, I’m sure I would have been a lot more engaged … I think the quality of it and my engagement went hand in hand.’

The book also examined allegations Brody would not read the full scripts but rather the pages being shot on that day. Brody said it wasn’t ‘a ringing endorsement for [his] conduct,’ but that he was on time and knew his lines.

Ben McKenzie said that Brody often incited a ‘feisty, feisty mood’ out of castmates as ‘he was not shy about’ his apathy with the show.

The show’s Rachel Bilson, who Brody had been dating at the time, said that she was in an awkward spot with his antics on the set.

‘How do you balance that? Because you want to be supportive of the person you’re with,’ she said. ‘But also I’m a firm believer in always being grateful, and gratitude comes first.

‘And I think there were probably times where that went by the wayside. You grow up, you look back, and you can realize when you’re young, you might behave in certain ways you wish you hadn’t.’

The book from author Alan Sepinwall features extensive interviews with the cast and crew of the series, including creator Josh Schwartz and executive producer Stephanie Savage.

Schwartz said in the book that he tried to weave Brody’s apathy with the material into the series, having his character begin using marijuana to reflect Brody’s lackadaisical nature.

‘Brody just changed his delivery, his investment in it,’ Schwartz said. ‘His style shifted to such a degree that we felt like we needed to account for it creatively. That’s where “Kaitlin gets Seth hooked on pot” took root.

‘We were like, “Well, how do we explain his lethargy on-screen? And at least if we can write that he’s stoned, then we’re not trying to write around it.”‘

Schwartz said in the book that ‘by the time we got to season three’ in the fall of 2005, ‘We were all burned out.’

He added: ‘We’d made so many episodes so quickly, and I think it wasn’t a happy set for long stretches of it. Quite frankly, everybody was over it at that point.

‘And I was one of those people who was over it at that point. It had been a great ride, but it had been a volatile ride.’

Savage said that the cast of the show began ‘to be a bit petulant with directors, having an attitude, reading a book during rehearsal instead of paying attention.’

Melinda Clarke, who played the role of Julie Cooper on the show, said that cast members ‘were very aware in season three of how disliked the scripts were, especially by the kids.’

Brody and Benjamin McKenzie ‘were like, “We’re grown men and we’re playing in high school still,”‘ Clarke said. ‘They didn’t really ever talk to me personally about it, but that was the general understanding on set.’

Tate Donovan, who played Jimmy Cooper, said that the show’s producers should have taken a more firm stance with the principal younger cast members instead of permitting them to take a lax approach, as they wanted to be ‘friends’ with them.
