Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, tragically passed away following a fatal accident in Zamora, Spain, on Thursday. The devastating incident has sent shockwaves through the football world, as many expressed their grief at his sudden demise. The tragedy occurred merely days after Jota got married to his longtime partner Rute Cardoso.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, it was Jota’s wife, Rute, who was called upon to identify both bodies after the tragic crash. The police were unable to identify the pair through the car’s license plate, so Cardoso was called in to confirm their identities.

According to reports in Portugal, Cardoso told Police about the two brothers’ plans, which were to spend the night in Benavente and then resume their journey on Thursday and reach Santander before catching a ferry to Portsmouth.

Psychological support was extended to Jota’s wife, and the personal effects recovered from the Lamborghini fire were released into her care. The discovery of the incident was prompted by a relative of the brothers, who reported their failure to arrive in Benavente. Subsequent verification of documentation confirmed their Portuguese nationality.

Jota had married his partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, posting a video of their wedding on Instagram just hours before the accident. They had three children.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Zamora shared details of the incident.

“The investigation into the crash is being carried out by Civil Guard traffic officers. We believe the car suffered a blowout from the marks on the road. The full police report once it is completed will be submitted to a duty court in Zamora which has launched an ongoing judicial investigation into this crash. That report is going to take time to complete, probably about four or five days but possibly longer. At this moment in time it is impossible to say at exactly what speed the car was going but that is something the Civil Guard investigators will be able to detail at least approximately in their final report from things like the skid marks. What I can confirm is that no other vehicle was involved and no-one else was hurt,” he said.

He recently enjoyed great success with his club and national team, helping Liverpool capture the Premier League championship last season. He was also part of Portugal’s team which win the UEFA Nations League last month.
