The rapper was killed by the combined toxic effects of fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine and promethazine, according to a Georgia medical examiner.
Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan died last month in Georgia from an accidental drug overdose, authorities said.
The artist, who burst onto the hip-hop scene more than a decade ago, was killed by the “combined toxic effects of fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine and promethazine,” the Fulton County medical examiner said in a statement Wednesday.
The manner of death was an accident, according to the medical examiner.
On Sept. 5, the medical examiner said Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital had notified its personnel of the rapper’s death.
Rich Homie Quan, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, was 33.
He scored a big hit more than a decade ago with “Type of Way.” He followed it up in 2015 with “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).”
His significant other found him sleeping on the sofa on Sept. 5, according to an Atlanta police incident report. When she went to check on him later, “his body was cold,” the incident report said. Police on the scene reported he did not appear to be alert, conscious or breathing.
The report also said police spoke to his brother, who earlier had found him asleep on the kitchen floor with food in his mouth. The brother lifted him and put him on the couch, according to the incident report.
According to a 911 call, Rich Homie Quan’s girlfriend told a dispatcher he was not responsive.
“I don’t see him breathing,” the woman said, her voice cracking. “I don’t feel a heartbeat or anything. I turned him over, I see he kind of foamed at the mouth.”
According to the 911 call, the girlfriend is heard crying and yelled, “He’s not waking up!”
The dispatcher gave the girlfriend instructions for how to do chest compressions.
Rich Homie Quan had spoken candidly about his drug use on the hip-hop podcast “My Expert Opinion.”
He spoke on the podcast about how he used drugs heavily after his 2013 smash, “Type of Way.” At first, he said, his drug use began because of how often he was performing and how he needed to stay up late.
He began using ecstasy, known as Molly, and drinking “lean,” a mix of codeine cough syrup and soda.
“I was on Molly every day. Geeked up,” he said. “I feel like I couldn’t do a show or a song without being on Molly.”
“I was lost in the sauce.”
In 2014, Rich Homie Quan was named to the rap publication XXL’s coveted inaugural Freshman Class, Variety reported. Others named by the magazine include Chance the Rapper, Ty Dolla $ign and Kevin Gates.
He was nominated for several BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including best new artist and people’s champ award, Variety reported.
