Sir Alex Ferguson sat down with BBC Breakfast to reflect on his late wife Lady Cathy, who passed away in October 2023, and the impact she had on his life
BBC Breakfast’s Nina Warhurst had the honour of sitting down with football icon Sir Alex Ferguson on Sunday (December 22) for an emotional interview, reflecting on a year since the loss of his wife, Lady Cathy Ferguson.
Lady Cathy, the wife of the ex-Manchester United boss, sadly passed in October 2023 at their home in leafy Cheshire. Alex, aged 82, first crossed paths with Lady Cathy back in 1964 while they were both employed at a typewriter factory.
The couple tied the knot two years later in 1966. He has often spoken of her as ‘the key figure throughout my career’, playing a pivotal role behind the scenes.
Since hanging up his managerial whistle, Sir Alex has joined forces with a charity that utilises music as therapy for individuals suffering from dementia, reports the Express.

In his segment on BBC Breakfast, he created a poignant playlist illustrating the milestones of his life and incorporated a song dedicated to Cathy.
Nina stated: “Let’s listen to this track though because I think this one that you said reminded you of Cathy.”
As ‘My Own True Love’ from the Gone with the Wind soundtrack filled the room, there was a visible emotional response from Alex.
Post-song, he reminisced, “When I went to see Gone with the Wind I was only 21 or 22, we were courting at the time.”

The conversation continued as Nina probed: “How’s life now without Cathy now after all of those decades together?”, to which Sir Alex opened up: “Well 50 years is a long time. She was a great wife and a fantastic mother, great grandmother.”
Seeking deeper insight, Nina questioned further: “The person behind your success?” and pointed out, “I once read that she was the most important influence.”
Alex affectionately chimed in: “Oh yes, the leader of the band.”
