apper Rich Homie Quan died on Thursday, the Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed to The Associated Press. While the cause of death was not immediately available, TMZ obtained the audio of a 911 call his girlfriend Amber Williams made moments before the 34-year-old’s death. Quan, whose legal name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar, died at an Atlanta hospital.
According to the TMZ report, Quan’s girlfriend said he was on the couch in the morning when she took her son to school. She put a blanket over him. However, after returning Williams noted that the rapper hadn’t moved. The media outlet further added that she did not feel a heartbeat and he was not breathing. There was foaming at his mouth.
Rich Homie Quan was one of the biggest names in hip-hop in the mid-2010s. The 34-year-old released a slew of mixtapes before he broke through in 2013 with the infectious “Type of Way.” The song became such a success that several other rappers jumped on the remix, including Jeezy and Meek Mill. He maintained his momentum, appearing on a YG track with Jeezy and releasing the London on da Track-produced song “Lifestyle” through his Rich Gang rap collective that included Young Thug and Birdman.
Several fans and rappers paid tributes to Quan. One person wrote on X, platform formerly known as Twitter: “RIP Rich Homie Quan, 1/2 of the greatest group since Outkast, the melodic genius who never stopped going in, who sang & wrote hooks as memorable as anything to ever chart, pop masterpieces straight out the mud. An era-defining ATL all-timer. The tour dates forever locked in.”
