Behind two tracks from Miley Cyrus’ upcoming album, “Something Beautiful”, are little white lies she told her godmother Dolly Parton.
Cyrus shared insight as to how the tracks “More to Lose” and “Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved” came to be in an interview on Apple Music’s “The Zane Lowe Show”. The interview aired Wednesday, May 21.
Behind “Something Beautiful”
In the interview, Lowe touched upon the song “Something Beautiful”, to which Cyrus shared she had a funny story to tell about how the song “happened”.
The singer said she visited Parton two Christmases ago and played the song “Something Beautiful” on her phone for the “9 to 5” singer.
“She [Parton] goes, ‘Alright, I see what you’re doing. Got any hits?’” Cyrus told Lowe. “And I’m like, ‘I do actually.’ She goes, ‘Oh really? What’s it called?’”
Cyrus shared with Parton the title of a new track she hadn’t written yet: “More to Lose.” To which Parton then asked “You got any more?”
Miley Cyrus Credits Dolly Parton for the Two Songs
Cyrus contacted Michael Pollack, her songwriting partner, to get in the studio.
“I said, ‘We got to write this song.’ He goes, ‘Well let’s do it!’” she told Lowe. “He had a song that he had already started with another writer who I had never met, and I had never heard any of it, but he goes, ‘It’s funny, I think some of this melody will work that I’ve been working on.’ And so I was like, ‘Well I don’t know, but I told her I’ll send it to her, so we’ve got to write this ASAP.’”
By January, the song was written and she shared it with Parton who asked again if she had any more songs. Cyrus shared another track she hadn’t written yet.
“I was like, ‘I do actually, and I think you’re really going to like the title.’ And meanwhile I’m going, ‘What titles do I have in my head?’ And I’m like, ‘I’ve got a song called ‘Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved,’ and you’re going to love that,” Cyrus told Lowe. “She goes, ‘Damn.’ She’s like, ‘I love that title, that should be your everything. You should have a makeup line, all these things.’ I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, no, I am, I’m working on it.’ I hadn’t even written the song yet, so all because, really, of her did those two songs ever get created.”
Cyrus’ upcoming album is set to hit music streaming services on May 30.
