Louis Tomlinson has been praised online after it emerged the musician has donated a special item to help support a special cause close to those affected by the Grenfell tragedy

Louis Tomlinson has been branded the “most caring soul” following an emotional gesture.

The musician has thrown his support behind a local community football club close to Grenfell Tower. Grenfell Athletic’s ‘Fabric of the Community’ project has seen people donate items of clothing in order to create a special kit for the club. These include items of clothing worn by those on the night of the fire which tragically killed 72 residents as a fire swept through the building in Kensington and Chelsea, West London.

Louis, 32, who is known for his continued charity support is no stranger when it comes to getting behind causes, such as Once Upon A Time, The Eden Dora Trust and Bluebell Wood children’s Hospice. Now, the That’s the Way Love Goes hitmaker has now donated an item extremely close to his heart.

Over the years, Tomlinson has made his love for Doncaster Rovers no secret and has previously played in games for the South Yorkshire club. The star has donated his beloved Doncaster Rovers FC shirt to help the organisation. Speaking about his gesture, Louis commented: “Wherever I am in the world and I have my Doncaster Rovers FC shirt with me, it reminds me of home. When I am touring and I see a member of the audience wearing one, I get a real feeling of home, no matter where I am.”

Louis’ dedicated followers have since taken to X, formerly known as Twitter to praise the star for his moving gesture. “Everyday I get reminded that he’s the loveliest and the most caring soul ever,” said one. A second penned: “Every day there’s a new way that reassures me how right I was to adore him to bits.” “I have so much respect for @Louis_Tomlinson. Like woow,” commented another. Louis, along with his former One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne also contributed to Bridge Over Troubled Water – a song dedicated to help support victims families and survivors.

The newly designed football shirt for the team features a perimeter area surrounding the official emblem of Grenfell Athletic. Items donated include some that survived the devastating fire which tore through the tower block on June 14, 2017. Elsewhere, former Arsenal star Héctor Bellerín has donated a shirt he wore during a match for the Premier League team. He has also previously donated over £19,000 to support the survivors.

A Grenfell survivor, Nick Burton, whose wife was the 72nd person to die in the fire has also donated the shirt he wore on the night. He says that the Fabric of the Community project has given him the chance to part ways with the shirt and gain closure from the tragedy. Nick said: “This is one of the only connections that I have to my home. I feel that it’s time to let go and now it will live on as part of the fabric of the community – the community that is everything to us. We have a lived experience and the love and strength of our community is just brilliant.”

The design will be worn by both the men and women’s team during the 2024/2025 season featuring NFC technology. The shirts by Kitlocker will enable fans to get involved with their kits as an NFC chip will be embedded behind the emblem and links to a story relating to the item of clothing which was donated to form the fabric.

Grenfell Athletic’s founder, Rupert Taylor said: “Our club was born out of a desire to heal and bring our community ever closer through the power of football. We’re so thankful for every person who donated their fabrics and bravely shared their stories, and we hope the project offers an additional avenue for healing and a platform for showing how inspirational our community truly is. The hearts and souls of the people of Grenfell are woven into Grenfell Athletic’s DNA, and now they’ll be woven into the club’s shirts, too.”
