Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy recalls first reaction to singer’s death: ‘Thought it was just a rumour’

Former One Direction member Liam Payne died in October last year after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Argentine capital Bueno Aires. His autopsy report revealed he suffered ‘multiple traumas’ and ‘internal and external hemorrhaging’, with 25 injuries that were ‘consistent with a fall from a great height’.

The singer had been staying with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, who flew back to America prior to his sudden death. Now, months after Payne’s death, Cassidy in an emotional interview shared details about the singer’s ‘final days’.

Speaking to The Sun, Cassidy shared, “Love is so optimistic, and you just hope that everything will work out at the end. If I knew, If I could see into the future, I would never have left Argentina. I had a responsibility, we had a responsibility. We had our dog and obviously I never, ever thought this event would occur. It was a tragic accident and no, I never did think he might die young.”

Kate admitted that her life has changed before adding that ‘it still doesn’t feel fully real for me that he’s not here.’ “From the moment I met Liam, I genuinely believed we were soulmates, he was the most humble, charming, normal person you could ever hope to come across and genuinely one of the best people I’ve ever met in my life. I think about Liam every second of every day,” added Cassidy.

Recalling the time she first heard about Liam’s death, Kate said, “I was in our home with our dog, scrolling TikTok and one of Liam’s friends called me. I didn’t believe at first. I thought it was just a rumour. Or something that somebody made up just to get views. Then I just had a bad feeling in my gut. I was like, ‘Why would somebody make this up?’ And I feel I just completely blacked out. When I found out the news, I tried to call him. I felt numb.”

“We were in such a great place, just full of love; he was so happy and positive. And I just can’t believe the way things truly ended,” added Cassidy.

Payne’s funeral was held in November in Buckinghamshire, England. It was attended by his close ones including Cheryl, the mother of his son Bear, and fellow One Direction members Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Niall Horan.
