Three people have been charged in connection with the death of One Direction star Liam Payne, who died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Liam Payne sadly died after falling from the third-floor balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and now a drugs ring has been linked to the tragedy.

Three individuals have been charged in relation to the singer’s death, including one person facing a charge of “abandonment of a person followed by death.” Liam’s body returned to the UK this week as the One Direction star’s loved ones prepare for a private funeral.

Liam’s death prompted immediate speculation after photos from his hotel room emerged, depicting what appeared to be drug paraphernalia. Authorities in Argentina are continuing their investigations.

Liam died after falling from a balcony on Wednesday, October 16 while staying at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. According to Alberto Crescenti, head of Buenos Aires emergency services, the impact of his injuries meant it was too late to save him.

The cause of death was determined to be “internal and external” hemorrhages and multiple traumatic injuries. A toxicology report was ordered to check for any drugs in his system at the time of death.

Local authorities reported that he didn’t adopt a “reflex posture” to protect himself from the fall, leading to an initial autopsy report suggesting he “may have fallen in a state of semi- or total unconsciousness.” On November 8, further reports ruled out suicide as the cause of Liam’s death, with Argentinian prosecutors concluding that he “did not know what he was doing and could not understand it” due to “the state he was in” before he died.

Following Liam’s death, South American publication Merco Press reported that investigators suspected a VIP drug dealer linked to the rich and famous was involved. Other reports suggested hotel staff were suspected of being involved in a drug exchange.

A source told the DailyMail in October: “There were two guys at the hotel that were giving Liam drugs. They sent taxis out to collect packages for him. One of the guys was working in the cleaning department. After Liam died, they noticed that one taxi was sent to the cleaner’s home address.”

The source added: “The cleaner and another member of staff have been interviewed by the police.” Reports this week revealed that at least one employee of the hotel has been arrested and charged in connection with Liam’s death.

On Friday, November 8, Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office announced three people had been arrested and charged in connection with Liam’s death. The prosecutors declared that one of the suspects, who has not been named but had been accompanying Liam, was accused of “the abandonment of a person followed by death”.

An unnamed hotel employee and a third unnamed person were charged with supplying drugs. Police in Argentina are also investigating a broken laptop and other devices seized that belonged to the late singer.
