Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took royal fans by surprise in 2021 when they decided to name their newborn daughter after Harry’s beloved grandmother.
The couple, who quit life as senior royals in 2021, welcomed their second child Princess Lilibet Diana into the world on June 4, 2021, at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California.
While some couples may struggle to pick out a name when welcoming a new baby, it seems that the decision for Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, was quite easy, with the name Lilibet being chosen in a nod to Harry’s grandmother the late Queen Elizabeth.
Although Lilibet is just a childhood nickname of the late Queen, and one lovingly used by her husband Prince Philip throughout their lives together, it is believed that the couple’s decision to use this name caused quite a stir.
Despite the fact Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson said the late Queen, who met Lilibet just a few times, approved the couple’s request to use the name, it has been reported that Her Majesty in fact was not happy by the decision.
Royal biographer Robert Hardman’s said in a book that the late monarch was upset at the decision and had one heartbreaking response.
According to Hardman, Queen Elizabeth told Palace aides: “I don’t own the palaces, I don’t own the paintings, the only thing I own is my name. And now they’ve taken that.”
The Standard reported that the late Queen, who was monarch at the time of Lilibet’s birth, didn’t feel she could say no to the request when asked by Harry to use her nickname.
The late Queen was reportedly surprised by the request, with the young Princess Lilibet, now three, being born just over a year after Harry and Meghan quit life as senior royals and moved to Montecito in California.
Despite claims the late Queen was not happy at her nickname being used, Prince Harry and Meghan have remained adamant that they sought permission.
Speaking previously through a spokesman, the couple said: “The duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement – in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called.
“During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”
Princess Lilibet will celebrate her fourth birthday this summer.
