Steve Davies worked with Meghan Markle as her bodyguard and has now revealed what life was like for the Duchess of Sussex when she first joined the Royal Family

Meghan Markle “is a good person” with a “big heart”, her former bodyguard has revealed.

Steve Davies worked with the Duchess of Sussex when she first joined the Royal Family. Meghan has been hit with claims of bullying by multiple staff members, but Steve has now insisted this has never been the case.

“She gets a bad rap for being a not very good person to work with, that she was this evil person in the Royal Family,” he said. However, Steve recalled her engaging with people from all walks of life, “working with charities to working with dog walkers and cleaners.”

Steve said he learned one big lesson from Meghan — “give respect to get respect”. He also admitted he “felt sorry for her” when she first joined the Royal Family.

Speaking to In Touch Magazine, Steve explained that the constant attention took its toll on Meghan. “She was paranoid. We had people following us around everywhere we went,” he said.

The bodyguard recalled being followed by drones and vehicles and described it as a “nightmare”. The Duchess of Sussex was also denied freedoms she had previously enjoyed.

Steve recalled one instance when Meghan said all she wanted to do was to be able to shop in a grocery store. Steve gave Meghan the permission to go and recalled: “I pushed the cart around the grocery store, and she was putting stuff in it. She really enjoyed that.”

Meghan herself has previously spoken out about feeling trapped during her time in the Royal Family. Speaking to CBS in 2021, she said: “I couldn’t call an Uber to the palace. You couldn’t just go.”

The former Suits star also said she had to give her passport and keys to royal aides. When she asked about going out to lunch with her friends, she recalled: “People within The Firm would say, ‘No, you’re oversaturated, it would be best for you to not go out.’ I go, ‘Well, I haven’t left the house in months’.”

While staff at Buckingham Palace made allegations of bullying against Meghan, which she has always denied, Steve said her staff in Canada saw a different side. He described her as being “warm and considerate”.

Steve also said people were often surprised by how friendly Meghan is and “what a big heart she has”. While Steve no longer works for Meghan, he admitted he would take on the job again and described the Duchess of Sussex as a good person to work for.
