A mother and her 1-year-old daughter were found dead inside their home in Queensland, Australia, after the baby’s father was struck by a car 10 miles away.

On Thursday, Feb, 11, teacher Kate Paterson, 38, and her baby daughter April were found deceased inside a property on Belivah Road in Brisbane, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, 7NEWS Australia and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Speaking at a press conference, Detective Superintendent Chris Ahearn confirmed that authorities were initially responding to a report of a 39-year-old man being hit by a vehicle on Beaudesert Beenleigh Road in Logan on the outskirts of Brisbane at around 7:30 a.m. local time.

Officers were told by witnesses that they saw the individual running into the road with what appeared to be a neck injury, according to Ahearn. “There are some witness accounts that suggest he was running towards where he was hit by the car and already had some injuries to the neck area,” Ahearn said.

The man was identified as Blake Seers, per The Sydney Morning Herald and 7NEWS.

After going to the man’s home to inform his family, officials discovered the bodies of his partner and child.

Both of the victims had stab wounds, according to 7NEWS, with Ahearn noting in the press conference that an edged weapon could have caused the injuries.

Paterson had just returned to work from maternity leave, 7NEWS reported.

“We are obviously investigating the nature of why that gentleman came to be hit by a car,” Ahearn said, per the press conference.

“Our minds are open as to what’s going on here, but again it is a suspicious death,” he added.

Local resident Riley Evans said the neighborhood was usually quiet.

“I looked out the window and then I saw all the coppers [police] and the ambos [ambulances] pull up and the fire brigade, and I thought it was just like a car crash or something,” Evans told The Sydney Morning Herald. “My mate … said someone got hit and he told me that he saw someone on the ground.”

As of Thursday, Seers remains unconscious in the hospital, according to Ahearn. Authorities are still yet to speak to him.

Police are looking into whether Seers had any history of mental health issues, per 7NEWS.

Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities. The investigation remains ongoing.
