Having signed a one-year, $62.6 million contract extension with the Warriors, Stephen Curry will become just the third player in NBA history to earn $500 million from his on-court salary. Curry joins LeBron James and Kevin Durant as part of this elite trio to have achieved such a major financial feat.
Curry’s first contract with the Warriors, when he was selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, was for four years, and paid him $12.7 million. The Warriors took up his $3.11 player option ahead of the 2011-12 season and did the same for the 2012-13 season when Curry had a $3.96 million team option.

Curry would then sign a four-year $44 million rookie extension the following year in 2012, which would kick in during the 2013-14 NBA season. This would take him to 2017, where he penned his biggest deal yet – a five-year, $201.2 million contract.
In 2021, he signed a four-year contract extension which began from the 2022-23 season, which paid him $215.35 million. This is the deal he is currently playing under, and his recent extension will kick in ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season.
Curry is perhaps one of the most unlikely megastars in NBA history. At 6’3″, and a primarily shooting-based skill set when he entered the NBA, not many expected him to find success in the league, as the NBA was dominated by big men who would play a more interior-oriented game.
Curry’s playing style revolutionized the NBA, as three-point shooting became an essential trait in players thanks to the blueprint for success that Curry set up during his career in the NBA.
Can Curry Win One More NBA Championship With The Warriors?
This current extension should take Curry through to the 2026-27 NBA season with the Golden State Warriors. There have been some rumblings about Curry’s future with the Warriors, considering how weak the team has gotten thanks to the departure of Klay Thompson, and the Warriors missing out on big stars this offseason.
The Warriors have maintained their stance that they do not want to let Curry go anywhere. However, the franchise is still acutely aware that their team, as presently constructed, cannot be expected to win an NBA championship. Perhaps the franchise is waiting for a star player to become available so that they can execute a trade.
The Warriors will need to be active in the trade market in order to land a big star ahead of the playoffs. The Warriors missed out on Lauri Markkanen, who signed a massive five-year, $238 million contract extension with the Jazz. So they must wait to see if a disgruntled superstar demands a trade during the course of the season.
Curry is coming off a solid season from a statistical standpoint, averaging 26.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds. Curry, despite no longer being in his prime, is still one of the best players in the league and should be provided with players who can help him compete for an NBA championship.
