A Sydney dog owner says she has lost her “soulmate” after her tiny chihuahua was hit and killed by a cyclist during a routine walk at their favourite park.

Megan Waterhouse was walking Spider, her four-year-old chihuahua, down Cleveland Street in Moore Park, Sydney, when the cyclist flew past them on the footpath.

“She was on the lead, she wasn’t even free,” Megan, 36, told Yahoo News.

“He just rode up behind me and over her.”

The incident happened at around 6.30pm on Tuesday evening, an hour before the sun went down.

“I saw the bike wobble as he was over her… there’s no way he would not know. Spider was screaming,” Megan said.

She immediately picked up Spider, who was in so much pain that she bit Megan’s arm.

“By the time I looked up, this guy had ridden off and was gone,” she said.

“There’s no way you wouldn’t know you hit something. And I understand that accidents happen, she’s so tiny. It is very possible he didn’t see her, but he didn’t stop.

“That’s the f***ed part.”

Pup rushed to vet but can’t be saved

With Spider unconscious in her arms, Megan ran home and raced her to the vet where they put her on life support.

She then had to take herself to the doctor for a tetanus shot, and around midnight the vet called her to tell her Spider wasn’t looking good.

Weighing in at just 2kg, the damage to Spider was irreparable. Among her injuries she had internal bleeding and brain damage.

At 12.30am, Spider went into cardiac arrest and while the vets managed to resuscitate her, they immediately sought consent for euthanasia.

At 1am, a distraught Megan said her final goodbye to her best friend.

Straight after, she had to go to the emergency department for her arm, and ended up visiting three different hospitals before undergoing surgery. She wasn’t discharged until Friday.

“It’s just not even real at this point,” she said, describing the events of the last few days as “traumatic”.

Call for witnesses, dashcam footage

NSW Police told Yahoo News that officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command have commenced an investigation.

So far, one witness has come forward who said the cyclist was wearing a “white aero helmet” and had a “high end” road bike.

“I just want him to understand what he’s done,” Megan said of the runaway cyclist.

“He’s taken away my little soulmate. I just want justice, but I also think there’s a bigger problem here that maybe shared spaces are not working.

“My dog was on a lead. It wasn’t like my dog was off road or off the lead or anything. And he was just going way too fast.”
