When Peaky Blinders first premiered in 2013, fans quickly fell in love with Gypsy gangster Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his band of razor blade-wielding brothers. But how will his story end? That’s been the question fans have wanted answered since the announcement that Peaky would end with a film. Because, despite the spinoffs that we know are in the works, this is the end of Tommy’s story.

Now that Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is streaming on Netflix, we have an answer to that question. Read on at your own risk!

Where is Tommy Shelby?

When the film picks up six years after the events of season 6, Tommy is no longer running the Peaky Blinders in Birmingham. Instead, he’s isolated himself in grief. He spends his days writing a book and talking to the spirits of those he’s lost, most prominently his daughter Ruby (Heaven-Leigh Clee).

But the reason for Tommy’s isolation isn’t just the loss of his daughter. As we learn in the film, Tommy, in a moment where he was “full of booze and rage,” killed his brother Arthur (Paul Anderson). “I killed me own brother because I wanted to be free of him,” he admits. (Yes, we see the death. No, Anderson is not in the scene.)

Consumed by grief and regret, Tommy has isolated himself. That is, until he’s visited by Gypsy queen Kaulo (Rebecca Ferguson), who helps convince him to return to Birmingham and help his son Duke (Barry Keoghan), who’s leading the Peaky Blinders down a bad path.

What’s happening with the Peaky Blinders?

That bad path, specifically, has everything to do with the war. In 1940, the Nazi government forged hundreds of millions of pounds in counterfeit currency, with the plan to smuggle it into Great Britain, and crash the economy, thereby winning the war for Germany.

Duke has involved the Peaky Blinders in that plan by working with a man named Beckett (Tim Roth), whose job it is to introduce 350 million pounds into the British economy using criminal gangs. (The Peaky Blinders would get 20 percent of that, which is 70 million pounds.)

Spoiler: Tommy is not a fan of that plan.

Who dies?

Arthur is not the only Shelby who meets their end in the film.

Just as Tommy decides to save his son and once again don his signature three-piece suit and newsboy cap, Duke learns the hard way that Beckett is dangerous. When Duke fails to kill his aunt Ada (Sophie Rundle), who’s trying to stop Duke by getting him arrested, Beckett takes matters into his own hands and shoots Ada dead in front of her son and her nephew.

In the moment of her death, Ada appears to Tommy as a spirit — and just like that, Tommy’s final story becomes one of vengeance.

Tommy has one goal for the rest of the film: To kill the man who murdered his sister. With a little help from his friends, he puts together an elaborate plan with more than one major explosion.

Ultimately, it comes down to Tommy versus Beckett, and despite taking a few bullets himself as he stands in front of Beckett’s car, Tommy gets his revenge. But his plan to stand in front of the car and meet his end is cut short when Duke tackles him out of the way. Then, as he lies wounded in his son’s arms, he begs Duke to shoot him and take over the mantle as Gypsy king. Duke complies.

What is Tommy’s ending?

The film ends as they burn Tommy’s body in a wagon, surrounded by pictures of those he’s loved and lost. In the final moments, his voiceover is heard saying, “I am free.”
