LeBron James expressed optimism about the recent addition of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, downplaying the notion that the move was designed to extend his career.

During an All-Star weekend press conference, James highlighted the boost Doncic’s presence gives the Lakers as they prepare for a crucial stretch run. Los Angeles has a 32-20 record and ranks fifth in the Western Conference standings.

James, the Lakers’ linchpin, has been impressive this season, averaging 24.3 points, 9.0 assists, and 7.7 rebounds across 48 games. With the team holding the fifth spot in the Western Conference, every game is pivotal as the playoffs approach.

Doncic, who joined the Lakers recently from the Dallas Mavericks, has quickly begun to leave his mark despite playing just two games due to a minutes restriction from a recent calf injury. He averaged 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in those appearances.

“We only had two games so far, and I believe he’s been on a minutes restriction since he came back from the calf. He hasn’t played since Christmas, I believe,” James said.

Reflecting on Doncic’s potential impact on his retirement plans, James was clear about his immediate focus.

“No, I have not given it that type of thought,” James said regarding the speculation about extending his career. “Just the excitement of being able to add a caliber player like that, a generational talent like that, to our franchise, it’s something that’s given me energy.”

James is hopeful about the synergies forming on time between him and Doncic as the Lakers prepare for the postseason.

“As [Doncic] continues to get in form, I think we could be really good going down the stretch. But we’ll see what happens,” James said

The Lakers are looking to solidify their playoff positioning. They hope the duo’s ability to mesh on the court as the season progresses will help them do so.
