In an attempt to connect the dots behind the decision to trade Luka Doncic, various reports and theories continue to circulate in the media. However, one common narrative that has been a constant is the 25-year-old’s poor conditioning levels.
Recently, former Mavericks executive Haralabos Voulgaris disclosed details that may have led to Doncic’s ouster. According to reports, the top management was alarmed by the reigning scoring champion’s dietary habits and authoritative demeanor.

“Every person who worked at the Mavericks, except for me, was terrified of this guy (Luka),” stated Voulgaris, who served as the director of quantitative research and development between 2018 and 2021.
The front office’s constant push for Doncic to get in better shape proved futile most times. Adding to this was the five-time All-Star’s somewhat self-centered approach.
Alleged starry tantrums
A generational player, Doncic was blessed with a versatile skill set. The Slovenian native’s ability to sell tickets and draw viewership made him a strong candidate for the future face of the league. Aware of his growing popularity, the ex-Mavs guard began displaying a controlling side.
“Doncic controlled more day-to-day decisions than the average player does, such as practice schedules, though superstars on other teams receive similar treatment.”
Despite being cautioned several times about his weight, it seemed to have no effect on Doncic. Revisiting a story about the 2019 ROTY in his debut year, Voulgaris addressed how the 6’6″ guard once carried a thermos filled with lemonade and sweet tea, “I know liquid calories are death.” It is believed that GM Nico Harrison was growing more concerned with each passing day and felt that “Luka Magic” was a short-term phenomenon.
Can LeBron James help Luka get to the promised land?
Now on the Lakers, Doncic finds himself on one of the most celebrated sports franchises in American sports. His opportunity to play alongside a once-in-a-lifetime athlete in King James increases the hype. In his 22nd season, the 40-year-old superstar continues to play at a high level and is known for his durability and elite fitness.
The only thing missing from Doncic’s resume is a championship, something James could help him finally get. Nonetheless, the Lakers need to add some crucial pieces to their roster to capitalize on this window of a few years between the two superstars as teammates.
With the exit of Anthony Davis, the Lakers require a big man. They could also use a sharpshooter who could help ease the offensive load. Nevertheless, we’ll have to wait and watch how the following months turn out for the Purple and Gold.
