Clem Burke, longtime drummer for Blondie, has passed away at age 70 after a private battle with cancer, the band confirmed in a heartfelt tribute shared on social media.
Known for his energetic playing style and contributions that helped shape the sound of punk and new wave, Burke‘s influence stretched across decades and genres.
“It is with profound sadness that we relay news of the passing of our beloved friend and bandmate Clem Burke following a private battle with cancer,” wrote Blondie members Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. “Clem was not just a drummer; he was the heartbeat of Blondie.”
Burke‘s driving rhythms were central to the band’s biggest hits like “Heart of Glass,” “Call Me,” and “Atomic.” But his talent went far beyond Blondie, with the band noting how he worked with a wide array of music icons over the years.

While Burke‘s drumming made Blondie a household name, his career spanned an impressive list of collaborations. Throughout his life, he worked with artists such as The Ramones, Eurythmics, Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, Bob Dylan, Bob Geldof, and The Go-Go’s, among many others.
“His talent, energy, and passion for music were unmatched,” the band wrote. “His vibrant spirit, infectious enthusiasm and rock-solid work ethic touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Though Burke‘s death followed a private illness, fans across the globe were quick to react to the devastating news. Many shared heartfelt tributes on social media, expressing admiration for his drumming and sorrow for the loss.
One fan wrote, “An iconic drummer, a true rock ‘n roll savant, your rhythm lives on. Thank you for your magic.” Another added, “May his beautiful soul and legacy live on through his music, friends and family.”
