An old rivalry was renewed when former Ohio State guard Jacy Sheldon got into a scuffle with former Iowa guard Caitlin Clark in WNBA play on June 17.
Sheldon, who plays for the Connecticut Sun, was guarding Clark of the Indiana Fever. The players were near the 3-point arc when Sheldon swatted at the ball, missed badly and hit Clark’s face, seemingly poking her in the eye.
Clark responded with a shove, which led to both teams getting into a scuffle and Sheldon’s teammate Marina Mabrey pushing Clark to the ground.
Once players were separated, Sheldon was given a flagrant one foul, while Clark received a technical foul. Mabrey and Sun center Tina Charles were also given technicals.
In the game’s final minute, Sheldon was at the center of another scuffle. Fever guard Sophia Cunningham wrapped her arms around Sheldon’s neck and pulled her down while trying to prevent a fastbreak basket.

The Fever ended up defeating the Sun 88-71 with Clark scoring 20 points, to go along with six assists and two steals. Sheldon recorded 2 points, three assists and three steals.

Sheldon and Clark are no strangers to mixing it up in intense games, with the two facing off six times in their college careers.
“I think Ohio State’s team has always battled us really, really well,” Clark said during her senior season at Iowa. “It kind of goes back and forth a little bit, and I think that’s what makes it so fun.”
Sheldon and the Buckeyes racked up a 4-2 record against Clark and the Hawkeyes, but one of OSU’s losses came in the 2023 Big Ten Tournament final.
