One Direction is arguably one of the biggest boybands of the 21st century. Their worldwide fame and devoted fanbase propelled the successful solo careers of the five lads from England and Ireland.
The boys—Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan—all appeared in the UK singing competition show The X Factor. They all auditioned individually but were brought back together by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger to make One Direction. The group was eliminated and placed third, but went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, releasing five albums (four of which went number one on the Billboard 200 chart) and selling out arenas across the world on their four concert tours.
While the boys raked in millions in revenue and experienced wild success during their boyband days, each member debuted their own solo career after the band announced they were going on hiatus. Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, and the remaining members of the group made a joint statement. “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say,” they wrote. “But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”
