Queen Elizabeth gave a curt reply to Prince Harry’s request to marry Meghan Markle, his controversial memoir “Spare” revealed.

As the Duke of Sussex celebrates his 40th birthday today, royal fans are reminded of the family rift that Harry’s marriage to Meghan caused.

“Spare” divulges the moment that Harry asked his grandmother for permission to wed the American actress, a divorcée. As sixth in line to the throne at the time, Harry was told that he needed the late Queen’s permission.

He decided to get his grandmother alone during a family hunting trip. Harry helped gather birds while his grandmother roamed the field with her dogs.

Eventually he plucked up the courage to ask, explaining that he loved Meghan very much and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.

“I stood completely still, as motionless as the birds in my hands. I stared at her face but it was unreadable. At last she replied: ‘Well, then, I suppose I have to say yes’.”

Harry was at first taken aback but realised: “She’s saying yes, you muppet! She’s granting permission. Who cares how she words it, just know when to take yes for an answer.”

While the late Queen’s response may seem cold, Harry reveals in “Spare” his sustained support for “his Granny” even after leaving the Royal Family.

He says in the memoir: “I’ll forever support my Queen, my Commander in Chief, my Granny. Even after she’s gone.

“My problem has never been with the monarchy, nor the concept of monarchy.”

“It’s been with the press and the sick relationship that’s evolved between it and the Palace.”

Harry’s relationship with his family remains strained after the passing of Queen Elizabeth. Royal fans were shocked when Prince William and Princess Kate wished Prince Harry a happy birthday amid their ongoing feud.

The brief message read: “Wishing a Happy 40th Birthday to The Duke of Sussex!”
