Outlander‘s series finale has left more than a few viewers stumped over the outcome of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) fate, as the final moments left their ending ambiguous enough to foster various theories. Warning: Spoilers for the Outlander series finale ahead!
As viewers witnessed in the episode, “And the World Was All Around Us,” Jamie partook in the battle at Kings Mountain, but a short-lived victory was punctuated by a single shot from the opposition’s leader, who refused to surrender, hitting Jamie in the chest with a bullet. Having felt it in her own heart, Claire, who had begun descending the mountain, turned back to be at her beloved’s side for his final breaths.
But in the same way that Claire held baby Faith decades ago, she cradled Jamie close to her and didn’t break contact, stretching out beside him and laying her body up against his. Her grief and refusal to believe Jamie was truly gone seemingly sent them both on a journey.
While Jamie certainly died, the final second before the credits saw both Claire and him gasp awake, eyes opening as they lay atop the mountain. Did she save Jamie with her healing powers, which were teased most recently in Season 8 when Claire managed to revive a newborn by mere touch?
Below, we’re breaking down everything we know about Claire and Jamie’s fate based on the prophecies they’ve encountered over the series.
What was Adawehi’s prophecy on Outlander?

In Season 4, Claire met Adawehi (Tantoo Cardinal), a Cherokee woman, who claimed to have dreamed of the settler, who was making her way in North Carolina after washing ashore in the colonies. Relayed by Adawehi’s granddaughter-in-law, Giduhwa (Crystle Lightning), her dream word-for-word was described as, “The moon was in the water, and you became a white raven. You flew over the water and swallowed the moon. The white raven flew back and laid an egg in the palm of her hand. The egg split open, and there was a shining stone inside. She knew this was great magic, that the stone could heal sickness.”
When Claire asked for clarification, wondering if Adawehi was a healer, Giduhwa confirmed as much, sharing, “a very powerful healer.” Ultimately, Adawehi told Giduhwa of Claire, “You have medicine now, but you will have more. When your hair is white like snow, you will have wisdom beyond time. You must not be troubled. Death is sent from the gods. It will not be your fault.”
At the time, Adawehi’s words were ominous and unclear in their meaning, but now that the series finale has aired, they could easily be applied to Claire and Jamie’s ending. After Jamie seemingly died, Claire released a breath, suggesting she was joining him, but when they awoke together, her hair had turned pure white… like snow.

And while Claire may not have had a role in Frank’s (Tobias Menzies) book that revealed Jamie’s fate, there was a sense of responsibility for the revelation on Claire’s end, since it was her first husband who wrote it, echoing Adawehi’s promise that a certain death wouldn’t be Claire’s fault. Adawehi’s instruction to “not be troubled” could have also hinted at Jamie’s inevitable survival, as Claire refused to allow him to die.
How is the prophecy related to La Dame Blanche?
Early in Claire’s time-traveling journey, she was called a witch for her healing ways, implementing modern medical techniques in 18th-century Scotland and beyond. She even earned the name La Dame Blanche, otherwise known as the White Lady, a figure from Celtic mythologies who is associated with death. While viewers know Claire as a life-saver, the nickname could very well have also been an allusion to her powers becoming strongest with her white hair, as Adawehi stated.
Is the prophecy tied to the blue light powers?

When Claire gave birth to Faith in Season 2, Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon) used this power of healing to help save her, and ultimately the baby, although Claire didn’t learn it until years later. This echoed her experience in Season 8’s third installment, “Abies Fraseri,” which saw Claire recount to Jamie how she felt a blue light of healing when Master Ramond touched her and that she felt it again when holding the baby that she would ultimately revive. Additionally, when Claire feels the blue light, there’s a vision of a bird flapping its wings, resembling the white raven Adawehi references in her prophecy.
Did Claire save Jamie in the Outlander books?

How ‘Outlander’s Series Finale Explains Jamie’s Ghost
As readers of Diana Gabaldon‘s books know, the TV series didn’t cover the full story of Jamie and Claire, with another novel on the horizon. And while the events at Kings Mountain unfolded in the book, Claire ultimately did revive Jamie with her powers. So, if fans are viewing Outlander‘s series finale as consistent with the book canon, then Claire did save Jamie.
