Queen Elizabeth’s Private Push for Prince Andrew Role Revealed in Newly Released Documents — and It’s Reigniting Royal Debate
7
Freshly released government documents have revealed a striking royal detail that is once again putting Prince Andrew’s past role under intense public scrutiny.
According to newly published files, Queen Elizabeth II was reportedly “very keen” for her son Prince Andrew to take on a prominent international role promoting Britain overseas — a position that would later become his appointment as UK trade envoy.
The documents, released by the British government this week, include a February 2000 memo written by Sir David Wright, then chief executive of British Trade International. In it, he stated plainly that the Queen strongly supported Andrew stepping into the role, describing it as a “natural fit” and saying no other member of the Royal Family was seen as suitable to succeed the Duke of Kent in that position.
Andrew officially served as the UK’s Special Representative for Trade and Investment from 2001 until 2011, travelling extensively while meeting senior business leaders, foreign officials, and government figures around the world.
But the newly released files have also reignited criticism because officials say there appears to be no evidence of formal due diligence or security vetting before the appointment was made.
That revelation has sparked fresh debate across Britain over how the role was approved — and how closely royal influence may have shaped the decision behind the scenes.
For many royal watchers, the disclosure also highlights the extraordinary loyalty Queen Elizabeth reportedly showed Andrew throughout his life, even as controversies surrounding him later intensified publicly.
Commentators say the papers offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at how the late Queen viewed Andrew’s future inside the institution — particularly as he searched for a defined public role beyond traditional royal duties.
The release of the documents comes as questions surrounding Andrew’s former trade envoy years continue drawing renewed attention in both political and royal circles.
While the role ended in 2011, the debate around how it began is now making headlines all over again.
