Prince Louis—along with his siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte—made a surprise appearance alongside their parents Prince William and Kate Middleton to kick off four days’ worth of celebrations honoring World War II veterans and VE Day.

On May 5, Louis—who just marked his seventh birthday on April 23—was keen to help his father the Prince of Wales look as polished as possible by brushing off something from the shoulder of his dad’s military uniform. According to The Daily Mail, Louis, “known for his cheeky antics at public events, helped to sharpen up his father” as he was seen “tugging on part of the uniform.”

As he is prone to do, Louis stole the show yet again, as he “also playfully stuck out his tongue while waiting for the action to begin.” (Louis’s playful hijinks have quickly become the center of attention at royal family events like Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and numerous Trooping the Colour balcony appearances.)

William sat next to Louis for the event Monday, and at one instance pointed something out to his youngest child. As William did so, Louis “was quick to recreate his father’s gesture,” according to The Daily Mail. Louis was later seen “clutching a fuzzy brown hot water bottle” on a cooler, overcast day in London to kickstart the VE Day festivities.

The Wales family of five joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other members of the royal family observing a military procession from a specially built dias on the Queen Victoria Memorial outside of Buckingham Palace. The military procession was followed by the royal family watching a flypast from the Buckingham Palace balcony and, later in the day, a tea party hosted by Charles for some of the last living veterans of World War II and their families.

Following Prince Harry’s bombshell BBC interview on May 2, it is understood that, for the veterans’ sake, the “fervent hope” is that nothing will distract from “celebrating with full cheer and proud hearts that precious victory and those brave souls on this most special and poignant of anniversaries,” The Daily Mail reported.

“The King, Queen, and other members of the Royal Family are much looking forward to all the week’s VE Day events, when they will unite with the rest of the nation and those across the Commonwealth and wider world in celebrating, commemorating, and giving thanks to the wartime generation whose selfless devotion duty and service should stand as an enduring example to us all—and must never be forgotten,” a palace aide said.
