Lakers star hints at the moment he will know it’s time to walk away

LeBron James has been a dominant force in the NBA since being drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the No. 1 overall pick in 2003.
Now, at 40 years old, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar continues to defy the odds, performing at an elite level even as he nears the end of his career.
Despite his ongoing success, James is candid about the fact that he’s nearing the end of his basketball journey and acknowledges that the decision to retire will be based on more than just physical decline.
During a revealing interview on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show, LeBron opened up about the thought process behind his inevitable retirement. Surprisingly, it’s not his body that will signal the end of his legendary career but rather his mindset and motivation.
Unlike many athletes who struggle with the physical toll of the game, James insists it will be his mental state that dictates when he decides to walk away from the sport.
“For real for me it’s my mind,” Lebron explained. “If I could continue to…I am all about the process. Like I am all about the process and if it gets to the point where I don’t feel like showing up to the arena five hours in advance or I don’t feel like training.
“Or I don’t feel like studying the scout sheet of guys. If it gets to that point like I know ‘You know what Bron it’s a wrap.'”
James has built his career on relentless preparation, discipline, and dedication. His passion for the process has allowed him to stay competitive far longer than most of his peers.
While physical conditioning is critical, LeBron believes his motivation and commitment to preparation are what have kept him at the top for so long.
Staying at the Top Despite Age
Despite his age, LeBron continues to be a pivotal force for the Los Angeles Lakers. Partnering with Luka Doncic, he has helped keep the Lakers in the playoff mix, proving he’s still capable of playing at an elite level.
Additionally, his leadership of Team USA to a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics added another accolade to his storied career, despite the grueling schedule leaving him with little time to rest before the new NBA season.
James‘ remarkable longevity has become a marvel for basketball fans everywhere. But even the all-time scoring leader acknowledges that his passion for preparation won’t last forever.
The moment he no longer feels driven to put in the hard work necessary to excel is when he’ll know it’s time to retire.
LeBron‘s story continues to be written, but the superstar has already left an indelible mark on the NBA. As he continues to compete at the highest level, fans worldwide will be left wondering just how much longer the King will reign.
