When Kristen Bell and Adam Brody’s characters meet in Nobody Wants This, they immediately click. But before that fateful moment, it’s easy to understand how sex-and-dating podcaster Joanne (Bell) and devout rabbi Noah (Brody) might have a spark when you see them interact with their siblings — these families have banter to spare.

In the opening moments of the new rom-com, we meet Joanne and her sister, Morgan (Justine Lupe), just as Joanne is fleeing a bad date. As the sisters make a break for it down the streets of Los Angeles’ sunny Los Feliz neighborhood following Joanne’s Tinder nightmare, “You get a really quick introduction into these characters’ dynamics,” Lupe tells Tudum.

Shortly after, the two characters dissect the disaster date experience while recording their podcast. “They’re incredibly close and they have a very easy rapport with each other,” she says, “and they feel very comfortable being completely transparent with each other about how each of them feels.”

That dynamic manifested in real life, too. “I wish I could send you [the] thousand pictures I have on my phone of one of us getting tired and using the other person’s shoulder as a pillow,” Bell told Netflix. “I fell so madly and deeply in love with Justine as a little sister on this show. I texted her every single day. I am so grateful the show brought me into her life, because that is a real true friendship.”

When we meet Noah and his brother, Sasha (Timothy Simons), in the next scene, the former is riffing on Sasha’s haircut as they head to dinner with Noah’s girlfriend, Rebecca (Emily Arlook). Or, judging by the hefty sparkler on her ring finger … his fiancée?

Since this show is about the love story between Noah and Joanne, you might be able to predict how that plays out.
