And fans tuning into the special were left wondering why he didn’t take center stage a week before.
The New Orleans native was overlooked for the Super Bowl halftime show in his home city.
Kendrick Lamar instead headlined the Superdome show during the intermission of the Philadelphia Eagles win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The show attracted 133.5 million viewers across America but proved controversial.
Lamar, 37, performed his famous diss track about Drake for the world to hear.
The U.S. Sun exclusively revealed that NFL bosses regretted snubbing New Orleans native Lil Wayne in favor of Grammy Award winning star Lamar.
An insider told The U.S. Sun “it was a mistake” to pluck for Kendrick, especially with the focus centering on the controversial content of his show and his hit Not Like Us, which insinuates rap rival Drake is a pedophile.
They want high-level NFL executives to make the calls along with Jay-Z and his Roc Nation chiefs.
“The same kind of mistake won’t ever happen again,” a well-placed source said. “This is what happens when you give too much power and responsibility to one person. There a many people in the NFL that want to see changes. They didn’t like this year’s halftime show and the way it happened.”
The U.S. Sun has contacted Roc Nation for comment but is yet to hear back.
An apology was also made to Lil Wayne, which was first reported by former FS1 Undisputed star Skip Bayless.
Another source inside the NFL says there is regret at how Bayless revealed the situation with Lil Wayne and admits the whole fallout has been “very, very frustrating to deal with.”
“We made a mistake, this news wasn’t supposed to be released, and we will learn from it,” he said.
A second NFL source echoed the regrettable decision.
“I mean, New Orleans is the city of Lil Wayne,” the league insider added.

“He did a lot and it would have been fantastic to have him do the halftime show and show his love, and feel the love, from his hometown.
“The choice was clearly the wrong one, and now the goal is to not make the same mistake from now on.”
Lil Wayne previously opened up about his disappointment in not being selected for the massive gig.
“I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown and for just automatically mentally putting myself in that position,” he said on Instagram Live in September last year.
“I thought there was nothing better than that spot, that stage, that platform, in my city.
“So it hurt, it hurt a whole lot.”
