Pete Wicks was left in tears during the latest episode of his emotional UKTV series For Dogs’ Sake after learning that a rescue dog he had bonded with was terminally ill.

The 36-year-old former TOWIE star became visibly emotional after meeting Theo, an Italian Mastiff at the Dogs Trust shelter, who was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) — a severe heart condition. Despite being young, playful, and full of life, Theo’s illness means he has only around 12 months left to live.

As the vet broke the news, Pete cuddled Theo and was filmed crying before stepping outside to collect himself. He told the cameras that he felt “heartbroken” and described Theo as “such a beautiful dog with so much soul and personality – he should be in a home.”

The TV presenter admitted feeling “helpless” after hearing the diagnosis, adding that he had “completely and utterly fallen in love” with the dog. “It’s broken my heart,” he said, struggling to hold back tears.

Pete went on to explain that rehoming larger dogs like Theo has become increasingly difficult amid the cost-of-living crisis. “He might not live the long life everyone hopes for, and his condition comes with costs,” he said. “But if there’s ever a dog who deserves love in whatever time he’s got left, it’s Theo. No dog should be in kennels.”

The episode, airing tonight, follows Pete’s efforts to find Theo a loving home for his final months. It’s not the first time the star has been reduced to tears on the show — earlier this year, he broke down when another rescue dog was diagnosed with cancer, recalling his own family’s painful experience with testicular cancer.

Speaking about the show, Pete shared that For Dogs’ Sake had been a “six-year passion project.” “Dogs have always been a massive part of my life,” he said. “They make me feel safe and happy — they don’t want anything from you other than love and trust. That’s a beautiful thing.”

Reflecting on the emotional journey, he added: “You see so much neglect, but giving these animals a second chance and showing them love really does change everything.”
