Family of 1-Year-Old Killed in Mississippi Police Shooting Demands Release of Video Footage

The family of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley, who was fatally shot when police opened fire on a vehicle in a Mississippi Walmart parking lot, is demanding that authorities release any available video footage as questions surrounding the incident continue to grow.
The shooting has sparked anger in Senatobia, where residents and civil rights advocates are calling for transparency and accountability.
Child Was Inside Vehicle During Police Response
According to investigators, officers responded to a shoplifting report at a Walmart on June 14 and encountered two women and the child getting into a vehicle.
Authorities said officers attempted to stop the car and claimed the driver accelerated toward them, nearly striking one officer. Police say an officer then fired, and the vehicle fled the scene.
Kohen Wiley was fatally wounded, while another woman in the vehicle suffered critical injuries.
Family Disputes Police Account

Speaking at a news conference alongside the family, attorney Ben Crump urged authorities to release body camera footage, dashcam recordings and any surveillance video from Walmart.
“If that is the truth, then show us that,” Crump said, arguing that public trust will continue to erode without transparency.
Kohen’s mother, Vellesiya Wiley, emotionally recalled witnessing both her son’s first breath and his last.
Questions Surround Shoplifting Allegation

According to the family, the incident began over a box of diapers being carried by another woman, whom they believe had already paid for the item.
Crump questioned whether deadly force was justified and asked why officers did not simply record the license plate and investigate later.
“You cannot put those two things next to each other and call it reasonable policing,” the attorney said.
Independent Autopsy Planned
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and says multiple agents are examining every aspect of the shooting.
Crump announced that an independent autopsy will be conducted, saying bullet trajectories could help determine whether the officer was directly in the path of the vehicle or positioned elsewhere when the shots were fired.
Authorities have not yet said whether any video evidence will be released.
