The sisters returned to the royal fold this weekend
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were “warmly welcomed” at Peter Phillips’s wedding this weekend despite being “in the eye of an unravelling storm,” a royal commentator has claimed.
The daughters of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson made their long-awaited return to a Royal Family gathering on Saturday, as the late Queen Elizabeth II’s grandson Peter exchanged vows with NHS nurse Harriet Sperling in a romantic ceremony in the Cotswolds.
The event brought together the most distinguished members of the family, including the King and Queen, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and Princess Anne.
Among the star-studded guests were Beatrice and Eugenie. The pair had not attended a family gathering in 2026 – a year that has seen their father arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
As for the sisters, the wedding was also set against the backdrop of public scrutiny.
A bombshell National Audit Office (NAO) report just hours before the nuptials over the weekend revealed that they had been living rent-free in their St James’s Palace and Kensington Palace royal accommodations.
Not only had they only been charged rent around 60 per cent of the properties’ market value, but it had actually been paid out of the King’s Privy Purse, largely funded by the Duchy of Lancaster.
Despite this, Beatrice and Eugenie were met with loving embraces by their relatives as they arrived at All Saints’ Church in Kemble.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told GB News that the pair were “warmly welcomed” but warned that they are not in the clear just yet.
“This was a private royal event, therefore it was natural that Beatrice and Eugenie attended and were warmly welcomed,” he said.

“However, their problem remains that they are still in the eye of an unravelling storm, however unfairly, because of their parents, who are notorious.
“It will therefore present a problem as their presence at an official royal event would, at this time with their parents in disgrace, overshadow it.”
Mr Fitzwilliams added that while the NAO report “made the headlines,” and faced criticism, “it actually showed no wrongdoing”.
However, changes could be on the horizon as a result of the revelations. It was suggested over the weekend that, when he assumes the throne, William will prioritise reviewing the use of official royal residences.
He could stop non-working royals from living in rent-free accommodation and ban sub-letting royal properties.
“The Waleses’ payment of market value rent for Forest Lodge is obviously the way forward,” Mr Fitzwilliams continued.
“This is a sensitive area with the public.
“The previous arrangements were very different, but if the King wants to fund Beatrice and Eugenie’s living arrangements, then he obviously can.
“However, the arrangement may change and William, it is reported, would certainly alter it.”
