Outer Banks is named after the very location it’s meant to represent, but it doesn’t entirely shoot there.
The beloved Netflix show is back for season 4, with part 1 airing on Oct. 10 and part 2 on Nov. 7. The past three seasons have taken the Pogues — John B (Chase Stokes), JJ (Rudy Pankow), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Sarah (Madelyn Cline) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) — across the world as they filmed in Barbados and their staple, Charleston, S.C.
Now, the Pogues are in for a new adventure, which is also mainly shot in Charleston. However, part 2 promises a journey overseas, with the cast traveling to Morocco for a month in early 2024.
How Did Outer Banks Season 3 End? Here’s How the Pogues Scored Long Lost Treasure — and Why Another Adventure Awaits
“We got to go to a place that none of us had ever been before,” Cline told PEOPLE of shooting in Morocco. “So it was a brand new experience that we all got to share. And I feel like shared experiences like that, especially on location and these faraway places, are just really, really special and memorable.”
From the shores of North Carolina to the spooky churches of Charleston, here are all the filming locations of Outer Banks season 4.
Kildare Island
Netflix
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Kildare is a made up island in the show, explained to be part of the Outer Banks area of North Carolina. In season 1, John B explains that Kildare is split into two rival groups, the rich Kooks who live on Figure 8 and the lower-income Pogues, who inhabit the south side of the island known as the Cut.
Though the true Outer Banks lie on the coast of North Carolina, including coastal communities like Dare County and Kill Devil Hills, Outer Banks has primarily shot in Charleston, S.C., as well as Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, a town eight miles east of Charleston.
However, for season 4, the show was filmed for the first time in North Carolina itself, where it’s meant to be set. Reports from local outlets shared that Outer Banks resumed shooting in November 2023 following the SAG-AFTRA strike in Wilmington, N.C.
One scene in which JJ and Kiera jump off a pier in episode 3 was filmed on Wrightsville Beach on Crystal Pier.
Poguelandia 2.0
Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
After finally finding long lost treasure, the Pogues cash it in for over $1 million. With their newfound riches, they invest in buying and re-modeling JJ’s house, as well as opening a surf shop. Inspired by the time they were stranded on an island they called “Poguelandia,” they renamed the new territory Poguelandia 2.0.
The house/shop was meant to replace John B’s home, The Chateau, as the main Pogue hangout spot after Rafe burned the former down in season 3.
“We knew the people who own that area and there’s just a bunch of land out there, so we were able to build this two-story shop and this dock at the end of the water that plays a big part in the story,” Daviss told Netflix.
Stokes shared that he even put some of his own sweat and muscle into helping build the property “as Chase and not as John B.”
The beach for the Enduro race
Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Location: Fort Fisher State Recreation Area at Kure Beach, North Carolina
JJ bets his friend group’s last gold nugget on himself to win the Enduro dirt bike race on the beach, which is shot in Fort Fisher State Recreation Area as the only beach that would allow four-wheel-drive beach access. The rest of the race through the woods was shot an hour away in Rocky Point, N.C.’s Copperhead Ranch.
Genrette’s house
Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Location: Admiral’s House in Charleston, South Carolina
At the end of season 3, the Pogues are presented with a new mystery: Blackbeard’s treasure. After blowing all their money, the group accepts a task from Wes Genrette, who believes his family is cursed because of an amulet stolen from Blackbeard’s wife.
The gang visits him and his son-in-law on Goat Island, a place said to be haunted, to discover the family’s rundown and spooky home.
The mansion, in real life, is none other than the Admiral’s House and Quarter’s G in North Charleston.
Kildare Hospital
Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Location: May Forest State Park in Charleston, South Carolina
Following a night of reckless diving in which JJ and Kie are both cut off from their oxygen, the two spend the night in a hospital in a hyperbaric recompression chamber for “the bends,” a condition that happens when nitrogen that has dissolved in the body tissue forms bubbles.
The hospital is located in May Forest State Park in Charleston, near where the rest of the season was shot.
Rafe’s house
Netflix
Location: Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
While the Cameron family previously lived at Tannyhill Plantation, it looks like Rafe has new digs in season 4 — along with a new person he cares about, Sofia. In episode 3, the couple spend time lounging in his front lawn as Rafe contemplates an enticing business offer.
Rafe’s new crib is set in the Figure 8, but in reality, it is located in Mount Pleasant.
Charleston church
Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
In the final episode of season 4 part 1, the gang travels to Charleston, where they spot a church that solves a riddle they’ve been trying to crack. The exterior of the church — which includes a cemetery where John B sees the grave of an ancestor — was shot at Circular Congregational Church, while the interior takes place in Unitarian Church, both of which are in Charleston.
Pope finds the entrance to the catacombs they are looking for inside, and he, alongside Sarah, descends down below to yet another new location: the Old Exchange Building (Provost) in Charleston.
