An 18-year-old woman has died and another teenager has been critically injured after falling while hiking in the Glasshouse Mountains on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Emergency crews were called to Mount Beerwah at about 10:30am on Sunday after reports that the pair had fallen a substantial distance.

The woman from Brisbane was assessed with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The 18-year-old man, also from Brisbane, was flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

The mountain had been closed to hikers due to adverse weather.
Senior Sergeant Kylie McLellan said the two climbers plunged between 50 and 100 metres while descending the mountain during “difficult” conditions.
“The falls occurred as a result of some light rain that made the terrain quite slippery,” she said.
Senior Sergeant McLellan said it was “an extraordinarily sad and tragic accident”.
“A group of young people hiking, partaking in some healthy activities … it’s an absolute tragedy,” she said.
“Our hearts go out to their family and friends.”
She said the incident involved six climbers across two separate groups.
“There was the deceased and her sister and her sister’s boyfriend in one group, then another group separate to that who rendered first aid,” she said.
The four other people involved in the incident were also rescued from the mountain but suffered no injuries.

The complex rescue operation involved QFES mountain rescue and remote rescue teams, who navigated difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions to reach the pair.
The mountain was closed between March 9-15 due to weather and was expected to reopen on Monday.
